Little 1 has been rather interested in garden snails since we tidied the garden and raced them up the slide (read about it here) last month. They have been keeping pet snails at preschool since the holidays and after one child went home with a couple the other day the rest of the children soon started following suit and I knew it wouldn't be long before we acquired some too.
I was handed the box by her sheepish looking teacher who said 'I'm sorry, they all want to take some home'. She then said that she was spending rather a lot of time in her garden looking for snails to bring into preschool each day which made me smile!
In the box were a pair of snails that Little 1 had named Topsy and Kerry (yes we have been reading Topsy and Tim books lately). There was some grass, a bit of bark and a piece of cucumber too.
We took them home and spent a little time watching them and talking about where they live, what they eat and what their shells and antenae are for.
I then suggested we had a go at drawing them, Little 1 did really well first drawing the snails and then their home too.

We let them go after tea to wreak havoc on the garden as I was not allowed to throw them over the fence!
I wonder what she will bring home next!
