4 months pregnant-already!!

As I am writing this post I am now 17 and a half weeks pregnant and well into my second trimester, it is going so fast, I can't believe I am almost half way already. Last week I had 2 appointments, one with my midwife and one with my consultant and so far things are going well.

I had trouble when I was pregnant with Little 1 and Little 2 and we are hoping it will not happen again. Halfway through my first pregnancy my blood pressure began to rise gradually and then I suddenly developed pre-eclampsia towards the end. It was picked up by my midwife at the 36 week check, I was sent straight to hospital where it was found to be quite bad so they induced me right away and Little 1 was born 3 weeks early the next day weighing 5lb 14oz. Luckily we were both fine and after she had a stint under phototherapy for having jaundice we were allowed home after a long 6 days in hospital. (To find out more about pre-eclampsia please visit www.preeclampsia.org)

When I was pregnant with Little 2, we were told that the risk of getting preeclampsia again was the same as for a first time mum, 1 in 10 so we thought it would probably be okay. This time my blood pressure started to rise from just 9 weeks but stayed within safe high ranges. I made it all the way to 33 weeks with a little extra monitoring from my great team of midwives when I began to feel unwell, it was Christmas eve and I just felt funny, I knew something was not right but hoped I was just tired as I was still working and little 1 had been unwell, maybe I was coming down with something. When I woke really early on Christmas morning I knew something was wrong and after seeing that my blood pressure was sky high on my monitor I rang the hospital and went in. Little 1 woke up to find Nanny instead of us and shared her christmas day with her, uncle Michael and Granny and Grampy instead, I felt really really bad about that but at just over 2 years old, I don't think she really noticed.

Meanwhile we were sat in an almost empty hospital room waiting for test results, I knew it wasn't great when the consultant sat on the bed beside me! He said I had preeclampsia again and that they were going to try and keep me going for a couple more weeks most of which would be spent in hospital and then deliver my baby early. I was put on tablets to lower my blood pressure and spent the next 36 hours mostly alone as I made Daddy stay home to be with Little 1. Tea time on Boxing day the consultant came to see me and said that there had been a change and the tablets had lowered my blood pressure so much that they no longer thought I had preeclampsia rather just dodgy blood test results due to my blood flowing too fast through my liver skewing the results. I was allowed home and not going to have a baby for New Year after all. We were both very relieved, and celebrated Christmas day on the 27th instead.

I limped along for another 6 weeks with blood and blood pressure checks every other day to check for signs of it returning, luckily it didn't and at 39 weeks they said enough was enough and I was induced. Little 2 was born in just 4 hours weighing in at 6lb 7oz.

So as you have read both of my previous pregnancies haven't been plain sailing at the end, we did weigh up the odds very carefully before deciding to add a third child to our family, I lost 3 stone last year in preparation hoping that being a bit lighter might help with my blood pressure.

At both my midwife and consultant appointments last week they did the usual checks and said the my blood pressure is currently perfect so I am already doing better than last time! My consultant has put me on baby aspirin too as apparently a recent study showed that it can prevent rises in blood pressure so we'll see if it helps.

Little 3 is proving to be quite active too, I have been feeling movements for the last couple of weeks not just flutters but proper pokes and somersaults too just like the other two. I don't think my midwife believed me when I said until she did the usual heartbeat doppler check and felt it herself while checking baby's position, she wrote 'active' on my notes!!

I am now waiting for my 20 week scan date to come through as I can't wait to see my baby again and hopefully find out if Little 3 is a he or a she.
