It is Little 2's second birthday this week and with her big sister at pre-school today we set about making her birthday cake. I asked her what she wanted on it and she said Minnie Mouse (she loves Minnie at the moment). Lucky for me I have a Mickey Mouse cookie cutter so I can adapt that and should be able to fashion a Minnie Mouse birthday cake fit for a 2 year old.
Both the Little ones like to cook and help out in the kitchen but it is not very often that Little 2 gets to do it alone with me. We started out by greasing the pans, she absolutely loved the 'painting' and did it for ages, I was a little worried there was too much butter on the pans but on the plus side the cakes slid out easily. If the children are helping to make cakes we usually do it by hand so they can do the mixing but as it was close to nap time I opted to cheat and use the food processor, Little 2 doesn't really like the noise and stands on her little chair with her hands over her ears during that bit. She enjoyed helping to spoon out the mix into the pans and then lick the spoons clean. She then wanted to help me wash up afterwards, they both like to do that at the moment too.
We just about had time to fill the cake with jam and butter icing before we picked up Little 1 and later when they were in bed I got creative with some royal icing, cookie cutter and some coloured writing icing and edible gel pens, I think it turned out quite well.
Little 2 was pleased when she saw it, she said 'Wow, it's Minnie Mouse' It tasted good too. It will be Daddy's birthday next, I wonder what he would like on his cake?.
